Is South Africa ready to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup?
The implications of hosting the FIFA World Cup for South Africa are far reaching for a number of reasons:
- Chiefly, it gives South Africa the FIFA imprimatur that says as a country it has crossed the threshold of development that few countries in the world have achieved; South Africa will join an exclusive club of countries which have hosted major world events.
- It sends a signal to the rest of the world that South Africa, long a country that has attracted international investments has earned the right to continue to do so in its post-apartied existence.
- It sends a resounding signal of approval to the rest of the world; South Africa is safe and secure for business, investment and tourism.
- For those who continue to think South Africa is not ready–you haven’t traveled to this wonderful country to see first hand the investment in infrastructure that is saying thank you to FIFA and the World–were open for business. KeNako—It’s Africa’s time!

Nichelle Gainey
Nichelle Gainey is founder and president of Silverstone International (SSI), a global sports marketing, logistics and technology firm. In 2006 while attending the World Cup in Germany, Gainey was tapped as a U.S. representative on the 2010 FIFA World Cup Planning Committee as South Africa prepares to host the world’s premier sporting event next year. In her role, Gainey has been striving to build business relationships in the USA and Africa nations.
Last year, Gainey participated on a panel at Harvard University’s 2008 Africa Business Conference, where she shared how she has managed to succeed in the male-dominated field of sports marketing, and why she feels more businesses should invest in South Africa. In May, Gainey was a special guest at the inauguration of new South African President Jacob Zuma. Her company is also working with the Republic of Tanzania on its 2010 World Cup strategic plan. Last year, Gainey was named by Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford as a member of a team he put together in a bid to bring the 2020 Summer Olympics to Birmingham.
Gainey is a former Assistant commissioner for an athletic conference. She has coached high school volleyball and played collegiate sports.
